Description:
INTRODUCTION: Under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA) the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Regional Wildlife Organizations (RWOs), and community Hunters and Trappers Organizations (HTOs) are responsible for the co-management of fisheries and conservation in Nunavut. BACKGROUND: DFO Science collaborates with the Pangnirtung Hunters and Trapper Organization (HTO) on various Arctic char research projects in Cumberland Sound every year. Our field projects occur year round in Cumberland Sound and we lack the internal capacity to complete the work, therefore, we routinely hire local field assistants, fishers, boat operators and rent boats, snowmobiles and qamutiiks through the HTO.
